In 1380, one Cecily (or Cecilia) Chaumpaigne formally released the poet Geoffrey Chaucer from a charge of raptus. The case itself is currently lost to time; we have neither party’s account of the events in question and, in fact, almost no information on Cecily Chaumpaigne beyond a handful of legal documents between May and July of that year. Although true neutrality is elusive, this project presents what information we currently possess in an accessible format without speculating about Chaumpaigne’s identity or the impetus for her original charge of raptus.
